Every Father's Day weekend, thousands of people come to Burlington, Ontario, Canada for the Sound of Music Festival. It is Canada's largest free music festival that spreads along the city's waterfront Spencer Smith Park and into the downtown core. This year, it is taking place from June 13 to 16, and the dedicated BurlingtonGreen Eco Team is doing its part to keep the festival green. We at the Starfish Canada will also be helping, and so can you!
The festival's line-up features a unique blend of new and emerging artists, Canadian icons and favourites of the past. Some of the past performers include Tom Cochrane, The Stills, USS, Divine Brown, Matt Dusk, Robert Michaels, Cowboy Junkies, Ronnie Hawkins, Natalie MacMaster, Glass Tiger, Trooper, Leahy, Michael Burgess, Serena Ryder, Jim Cuddy Band, Finger Eleven, Molly Johnson, David Wilcox, 54-40, Kim Mitchell, Valdy, The Philosopher Kings, Tomi Swick, Kim Stockwood, The Good Brothers, Marc Jordan, Sloan, Tom Wilson, Murray McLauchlan, Spirit of the West, The Trews, Bedouin Soundclash, Tokyo Police Club, Emerson Drive, Devo, Men Without Hats, Carly Rae Jepsen, Arkells, Walk Off The Earth and Treble Charger, just to name a few.
BurlingtonGreen will be supporting this world class event for a fifth year in a row. The Festival's dedicated Eco Team coordinates a fleet of volunteers that manually sort nearly 15 tonnes of garbage in 4 days. Whenever a bag is changed anywhere in the festival it is brought to a central sorting tent where all the filled garbage bags are then sorted by volunteers who remove all the recyclables & compostable items, saving them from the landfill. If you are interested in volunteering with the team, check out the details here.
The festival is a prime example of how a community comes together to celebrate good music, friends, and family. Its volunteers work tirelessly to keep the festival running, and running for free. The cherry on top is the extensive measures the community takes to make sure the event is as 'green' as possible.
We at the Starfish Canada are going to be doing our part as well. We will be at the festival all weekend talking to volunteers who are doing their part to green the festival. If you don't already, you should follows us on twitter (@the__starfish) for tweets on how the festival is doing. If you happen to be at the show, join in the conversation and help spread the word about the great work that the volunteers are doing. Use #SOMLive as a hashtag. If you happen to be an Instagram user, you should help put the festival on the global eco-friendly map by photographing any piece of litter you see, tagging it with Litterati, and then properly disposing it afterwards.
