Jeffrey Chan is an extremely involved and dedicated Undergraduate student who has been an active volunteer at the McMaster Office of Sustainability. Since June 2012, he has taken the initiative to lead a handful of sustainability efforts, including the Clean Air Commute 2012 at McMaster University. Chan has also been involved in conducting a composting pilot in student residences and has worked closely with McMaster faculty members to design a sustainable written work submission guideline. Parallel to these projects, Chan has also worked to promote environmental awareness within McMaster residences by advising the Inter Residence Council on issues around the promotion of sustainable thought and lifestyle.
Every environmentalist has an initiative that visibly showcases their commitment to the environment. According to Zeinab Rahal, Chan’s nominator, that initiative was the composting pilot in the McMaster-based Mary Keys Residence. Chan’s goal was to educate new students about waste disposal. As part of this, he designed a comprehensive waste chart, which he then worked with a third party waste service provider to construct as a laminated poster and fridge magnet. This way it would be accessible and usable amongst the student population.
With his array of experience educating students, Jeff has also been involved with research around pest and odour control of campus green bins. Analogously, he has worked with Housing and Conference Services and McMaster’s Hospitality Services to apply the best procedures for organic waste disposal in student residences.
Chan’s nominator says that “working with such an engaged student has taught me to go after what I love. When I first met Jeff, he was initially thinking of pursuing a career in a different path, but after his involvement in numerous sustainability initiatives, Jeff decided to change the direction of his study so that he can further his knowledge in sustainability and the environment.”
Congratulations to Jeffrey Chan for all his hard work and dedicated efforts! You are number 23 on our list of Top 25 Environmentalists under 25!
