The first ever conference of the Youth Arctic Coalition, entitled Breaking the Ice, will take place on February 1st & 2nd, 2014.
Designated ‘satellite’ meeting locations will be established across the Arctic, from which participants will partake in the virtual conference. Individuals may also participate from any location across the world.
Holding the conference virtually across multiple time zones will minimize the environmental impact of our collective action and increase accessibility for international participants. We also hope to hold a small physical conference in Ottawa, where directors and participants can engage with the Canadian media.
At the conference we hope to partner with other international youth organizations who share goals and values with the YAC, and collaborate to finalize a constitution, mission statement, and declarations on Arctic issues. We will present these materials to the Arctic Council and the governments of Arctic states.
We are seeking input of all kinds on the following issue-areas, which will be the subject of YAC position papers to be finalized collaboratively at the conference: food security in the North, energy exploration, culture and languages, health and well-being, human rights of indigenous groups, Arctic contaminants, education, and Arctic sovereignty. After finalizing the papers we will share them widely, presenting them to Arctic organizations and the governments of Arctic states.
Head over to our Input page to lend us your thoughts.
