A Modernized Guide for Eating.

A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon an interesting contest from the editors at GOOD Magazine. They challenged readers to design their own food pyramid, and it’s an idea that is definitely worth considering (some of the designs can be found on their website).

This really got me thinking about the concept of what eating really means to people today. In the past few years, people more than ever have started looking beyond the idea of food as a mere means of sustenance. An apple may fundamentally be just calories and nutrients, but today we see that food can be utilized as anything from a religious requirement to a political statement or a method of self-expression. We can consider things like: Where was this apple grown? What types of substances were used in its production? How much ecological damage did this food item incur? How were the workers treated at the facility that produced it? Is the consumption of this food in line with my values and beliefs? Clearly, there are important things to consider other than what we see on the nutrition facts.

If you could create your own food pyramid, what food groups would it include? Vegan foods? Local foods? Fairly traded? Organic? Peanut-free? Kosher? Raw?  Don’t get me wrong, the Canada’s Food Guide is great from a health perspective, but hopefully this gets you thinking about the types of foods you consume on a daily basis and why and how it impacts not only yourself, but the world around you.
