Cool as a cucumber (literally).

There is no doubt that we are in the middle of summer and the extreme heat is upon us.  Instead of opting out to the frigid air conditioning of the indoors, there are many other ways to embrace this wonderful season.

July and August are delightful months for agriculture in Ontario. The season is full of great local fruits and vegetables.  For our convenience, grocery stores privilege us with an array of fruits and vegetables all year round, but the summer is a great time to take advantage of local delicacies.

A long list of available produce can be found here.  Included on the list are beans, beats, peppers, tomatoes, apples, raspberries and blueberries.

In addition to eating local foods there are many farms that let you pick your own produce. Self picking is a great summer activity and way of supporting local farms.

I challenge us all to embrace what our local land has to offer and only eat what is in season for the summer. This should be a simple task as there is a wide variety of available produce that provides us with all the necessary vitamins we need.

What better way is there to embrace the summer months than by filling yourself with delicious fresh fruits and vegetables and staying cool as cucumber in the process?
