Yesterday afternoon, Juno award –winning musician Dan Mangan took a submarine dive off the coast of West Vancouver, British Columbia to see the world’s only glass sponge reefs.

Mangan went to Twitter to share his experiences and excitement for the cause (see below). He is one of eleven people who were able to see these sponge reefs up close during the dives last Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society is currently advocating for fisheries closures and Marine Protected Areas in the area where these reefs reside. These reefs were originally thought to be extinct, but were found approximately 20 years ago and are yet to be protected. Dr. Manfred Krautter, a paleobiologist who specializes in sponge reefs, equated the finding to a re-discovery of dinosaurs.
