Kokou Elom Bayita: Informing and motivating citizens in Togo, Africa.

In preparation for the upcoming 10th World Wilderness Congress in October, the Starfish has collaborated with CoalitionWild to announce finalists for its 'Wilder World Challenge'. Here, we present the stories of a passionate and innovative movement of people under 30, seeking to create a wilder world.

The opportunity to gather in solidarity and discuss issues of interest is a valuable experience. The ability to discuss issues with others, especially experts on the subject, can be incredibly useful. Campaigns, which revolve around environmental issues, can be scarce in developing countries and, consequently, excludes citizens from information and input. In Togo, Africa, Kokou Elom Bayita has initiated many valuable campaigns around citizenship, the environment, and the practice of hygiene/public sanitation. Bayita’s diligent work to organize individuals and provide a space for learning is outstanding. As one of the finalists in CoalitionWILD’s 2013 Wilder World Challenge, we recognize Bayita’s social beneficence and dedication to promoting healthier lifestyles for everyone.

The developments in camera technology have forever changed the ways in which we can watch wildlife. Today, there are many shows/movies that portray animals interacting with each other and their natural environment. We tend to assume that the animals we watch through our television are unaffected by the film crew’s presence. In reality, human involvement with these animals can be detrimental to the wildlife’s safety. 16 year old Abbie Barnes, of CoalitionWILD’s 2013 Wilder World Challenge, aspires to create films that expose the secrets of wildlife documentaries as well as highlight the importance of conservation.

Throughout our youth we learn specific subjects chosen by those who organize our education system. Typically, the subjects remain unchanged and consist of broad coverage. For example, math and science are mandatory subjects, which we learn about repeatedly. Despite being in a socially, economically, and environmentally shifting world, new school subjects, that are more applicable to our current situation, are often not offered. Lawrence Dan Dizon suggests that Environmental Science classes deserve to play a role in school curriculums. Dizon is currently working on a project to address the “environmental void” in the education system and hopes to encourage schools to teach about environmental issues. Dizon’s determination to bring Environmental Science to schools around the world is commendable. His commitment to provoke the change has landed Dizon amongst the finalists in CoalitionWILD’s 2013 Wilder World Challenge!

Over hundreds of years, individuals and communities have been committed to conserving nature throughout Peru. This constant effort and dedication to create a sustainable Peru generally went unknown until the 90’s. In the 1990’s, a campaign was developed to bring recognition and public support to conservation efforts in Peru. The purpose behind the campaign was to develop a platform to promote the active, willing, and dedicated civil societies who conserve the nature of Peru. The campaign also assisted in providing several legal tools in order to support conservation with a legal and regulatory system. Bruno Monteferri decided that recognizing active conservation efforts while encouraging public involvement is vital to creating a wilder world. Monteferri’s effort recognizing conservationists and sparking public concern have placed him amongst the top submissions in CoalitionWILD’s 2013 Wilder World Challenge!
