Sicellia Tsui is a graduate from SFU’s communication program with experience in community engagement and writing for social change. Her interest in environmentalism—or what we might call “sustainability” today—began at a young age, when she developed a deep sense of connection to the curious lifeforms that surrounded her home, from trees to snails to beings she could neither name nor know. Frustrated and disappointed by the inertia of transnational capital—and its utter disregard for democracy, animal, human-animal and planetary wellbeing—she began exploring ways to mobilize people towards dialogue and positive social change. From participating in civic innovation, digital democracies, to sustainable development efforts, she’s yet to find anything more powerful and enabling than a good story. At The Starfish Canada, which is founded on the premise of a similar belief, Sicellia hopes to empower others through honest and contextually rich storytelling, often using personal stories to highlight her own connections to the dilemmas, struggles, and contradictions in the issues that permeate “sustainability”.
