Annual salary: $85,000-$95,000, commensurate with experience

We are a registered charity that celebrates young environmental leaders by connecting them with a platform for storytelling and a community of change-makers. Since 2010, we have inspired young Canadians to take leadership roles in their communities and to celebrate their peers contributing to the environmentalism movement.
Overview of the role:
The Starfish Canada is searching for an experienced and values-driven leader with a dedication to solving environmental issues, relationship building and operational excellence to advance our pursuit of expanding the youth environmentalism movement across Canada.
The Executive Director represents the organization to the greater community of young environmental leaders and change agents and is responsible for the successful leadership, overall management, and day-to-day operations of the organization according to the strategic direction, and policies set by the Board of Directors. They will also be responsible for policy implementation and effective management of The Starfish Canada’s operations and all its programs, including furthering partnerships, scaling programming initiatives and meeting community partnership goals.
With support from the Director of Finance + Fundraising, embark on new partnerships with values-aligned organizations and sustain or scale current partnerships through presentations and/or reporting to external partners
Set and plan annual budgets that reflect a healthy, thriving organizational profile
With support from the Director of Finance + Fundraising, ensure that our financial records are up-to-date and accurate
Provide direct support to our fundraising team, which may include grant management, reviewing proposals, and providing coaching on successful fundraising measures
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
With the support of the Director of People, create teams that lead with allyship and action at the heart of their work and support their personal and professional development initiatives
Support our organization’s goal to become fully bilingual in French in the next three years and develop other supports for multilingualism
Communication and organizational management
Ability to focus our teams to meet our goals within a shifting landscape of environmental and social justice shifts
To have a pulse on the current environmental events, trends, and issues and be able to respond accordingly with sound strategic decision-making
Modelling a positive culture and healthy work environment where you’re inspiring our team to move forward collectively and empathetically
In conjunction with the Director of People, create and iterate on the supports and structures needed to provide meaningful employment to our staff and paid interns
To lead our entire staff team in weekly meetings, plus 1-on-1 meetings with Directors and other Managers as appropriate
Board of Directors
Regular check-ins with the Chair and Vice-Chair to prepare for upcoming meetings and set agenda items
Supporting the BoD in determining our strategic plan and corresponding operational plan and its priorities
With support from the Director of Finance + Fundraising, reporting on financial health and plans and setting board fundraising goals
Leads the staff team in the preparation of reports for monthly board meetings and presents that report to the BoD
Assist and advise the Board on compliance requirements and operating the organization
Implementing all policies adopted by the Board and recommending appropriate policy issues for the Board’s attention

Need to have
Proven track record of sound financial management and fundraising experience
Experience and/or expertise in the environmental space with an additional aptitude for working with a social justice and DEI lens
Must be able to communicate professionally in English (aptitude in French is an asset)
Excellent multi-audience communication skills across multiple channels
Experience leading teams and a demonstrated understanding how to empower volunteers and staff members in an online environment
Nice to have
Experience leading or working with nonprofits and charity governance models
Established network in the environmental and/or charitable space
Bilingual or multilingual
Post-secondary education is not a requirement, but may assist applicants in the absence of experience in nonprofit management, youth empowerment, environmental justice and environmental conversation
As a youth-based organization, the successful applicant will have a clear track record of resonating with young people. This may include identifying as a youth applicant or having experience leading youth-based programming

We will accept applications until we have selected a candidate. Considering the competitive nature of this position, we recommend early applications.
Candidates may be contacted for a brief call to learn more about their interest and experience.
Selected candidates will then be invited to meet for 60-minutes with a panel of two senior leaders at The Starfish.
Successful candidates can expect a second 60-minute meeting with an additional panel of two senior leaders.
Following that, selected candidates will be invited to share their references.
We are ideally expecting to extend an offer to our new Executive Director by December, 2021.
